They are one of the largest species of tortoise in North America and can grow to be up to 18 inches in length. Gopher tortoises are known for their burrows, which they dig using their powerful front legs. These burrows can be up to 30 feet long and 15 feet deep, and provide shelter for a variety of other animals. Gopher tortoises are herbivores and their diet consists primarily of grasses and other plants.
